Essex & Suffolk Water - Filter Bed Gantries

SCX Special Projects created three 45m wide travelling and rotating gantry frames capable of deploying 2,500sqm of cover over the water surface of 18 filter beds at Essex & Suffolk Water’s Layer Water Treatment Works in Colchester.

Exposure to sunlight causes algae to grow very quickly on the surface of the water and removing it was proving to be an expensive, labour-intensive task. What Essex and Suffolk Water needed was a system capable of preventing exposure to the sunlight. By covering the surface area, it was thought that acceptable water quality could be preserved for long periods of time, significantly reducing the need for manual cleansing, to improve the cost-effectiveness of the company's water treatment process.

The difficulty came with deploying and removing such a large covering, until SCX Special Projects’ capability in handling large structures provided this rotating gantry solution.

The 18 beds are all covered by just three SCX Special Projects’ bespoke gantries, which straddle the width of a bed and are each able to traverse across six consecutive beds. With a travelling speed of up to 10m per minute, each gantry is capable of travelling the combined 400m length of all six filter beds in 45 minutes.

Each 45m gantry is fitted with a 2.2m diameter variable speed rotating drum. As the gantry is traversed over the water surface, the drum rotates and deploys enough specially manufactured breathable cloth to cover one filter bed at a time.

The gantries run along two sets of track either side of the filter beds. Sensors detect the alignment of the gantry and a slewing ring and pivot system automatically corrects the gantry rig and keeps it perpendicular to the tracks, preventing it from skewing and damaging itself.

The gantries are pendant-controlled from the side of the beds and require just two operatives to cover a single filter bed in as little as 20 minutes.
